Last June, Judi Kunkle and her family were all stunned when her 11 year old daughter, Lily, slipped into a coma and was then diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Lily luckily came out of the coma and survived, but is now forced to face this disease everyday.
Wanting to help her daughter, Judi relentlessly researched Type 1 Diabetes and found out that Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are often mistakenly thought to be the same. While Type 1 is a disease that attacks insulin, a hormone that helps the body digest sugar, Type 2 is a disorder where the body doesn’t use insulin correctly. Judi also discovered that many parents of children with Type 1 didn’t know what was happening when they started showing symptoms. With this being such a common misconception and with so many people not getting the proper facts, Judi knew she needed to spread awareness to save lives.

The Sub-30 Club is an international group of avid runners who have a group goal of running a 5K race in under 30 minutes. The Sub-30 Club started in April 2012 when Ted Spiker wrote on his blog that he wanted to run a 5K of his own in less than 30 minutes. At first, he thought maybe 20 people would sign up to be part of the group. Today, they have close to 4,000 members in the Facebook group.
The women of Kappa Epsilon from Duquesne University hosted their tenth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon this October. The Kappa Epsilon women started this event because of a lunch they had ten years ago with six breast cancer survivors. Since then, the impact of those survivors and the sorority’s passion to help this cause has allowed the luncheon to grow and include friends and family of the sorority, the entire university community, and speakers that are either breast cancer survivors or researchers.
